For me, being a product manager is all about:
π€ understanding and shaping the vision
π€ gathering data, both qualitative and quantitative, to validate your assumptions
π€ following a strategy instead of creating a backlog
π€ focus on high outcome with low output
π€ making decisions on rational conclusions with a light touch of gut feeling
π€ enabling your team to understand and create
π€ agile mindset to create accountability and independence
Things I strongly approve:
Des Traynor about his Product Strategy
Jana Bastow about Roadmaps:
Timeline roadmaps suck - Janna Bastow's Twitter TED Talk
Ryan Singer and Shape up:
π When needed, I know how to write queries in (my)SQL and I understand when non-relational databases make sense. These skills are mainly used for Product Analytics or BI tools. Big fan of Metabase & Amplitude.
π Believer of no-code/low-code tools like Retool or Airtable, which have helped me a lot to create fast solutions for simple problems.
π I like to think about high-level architecture. Events, APIs, micro-services, data storage and usage of Cloud infrastructure or XaaS/PaaS/SaaS are building blocks I like to understand when talking about solutions.
π I've built a bunch of web applications in the past, and still know my way around PHP or modern JS frameworks (with the help of ChatGPT).
π Cloud Platforms as GCP and AWS or the what/how/why of CI/CD, pipelines, containerisation and scaling challenges are still an interest but not actively maintaining my knowledge.
